  • Summer Raffle- Tickets are here and ready to be sold! At just $1 each, you can have a chance to win great prizes from Moonshine, Birds Barbershop, MYO Massage,  TacoDeli and many more as our list continues to grow. See a volunteer to sign up to win!  The drawing will be held at a special event on July 4.
  • We’re working on our May Happy Hour with one of our favorite spots. This time we’ll have a specialty cocktail with proceeds going to our project! Details to be announced soon.

Meeting Recap #2

Here’s a quick update on what we discussed at our last meeting:

  • Update from BFT- Contractors are drawing up building plans for 3 proposed projects and they will send estimates and project development plans to us soon.  Once received, we will make a decision on which project we will fund.
  • Update from ABOUTAsia Schools (formerly IAMCambodia)- In exchange for their backing of our project, ABOUTAsia Schools will receive 5% of the funds we raised that will go directly into their school programs in Cambodia. They’ve got some wonderful initiatives, please take time to read about what they do!  Also, anyone who donates $50 or more will receive a donation letter of receipt for tax purposes. Please note that all checks should be made out to ABOUTAsia Schools, and “Austin2Angkor” should be written in the memo line.  Online donations will be possible very soon!
  • Events- We’ve got some great ideas in the works. Look out for news on a dance party, award-winning documentary screening, happy hour and big raffle in the coming months!
Be on the lookout for our fancy website launch and a new Facebook page coming very soon. Things are rolling, people. This should be an action-packed year.

Meeting Recap #1

Here’s a quick update of what we discussed in our first meeting:

  • We set our goal at $50,000 by October 1.  This will leave at least 4 months for construction to get underway if we settle on building some sort of structure.  Track our progress with the sidebar thermometer!
  • Volunteers are working on bios and mugshots for the website.
  • We now own www.Austin2Angkor.com!  Nick will link the blog soon.

…and the agenda for our meeting next week:

  • Update from BFT regarding project options that are in line with our goal and target arrival date of February 2012.  They are in the process of putting project proposals together for us.
  • Marketing materials–we will check out Vanessa’s design for a postcard and discuss printing options. Also need to start thinking about a press kit.
  • Each volunteer is coming prepared to present one fundraising idea to spearhead.  We have some great ones in the works!
  • Brainstorm our connections that could help along the way with in-kind donations.  If you’re reading this and want to help in any way, please email us at austin2angkor [at] gmail [dot] com.

And We’re Official!

The kind folks at IAMCambodia have agreed to support our project! They came highly recommended by BFT Center and turns out they are actually the US-counterpart to the non-profit organization in Cambodia that directed me to BFT in the first place.  Go figure.

Please take time to learn more about the admirable work they do in Cambodia by clicking here or the new widget in the sidebar.  It really is the perfect partnership for our project.

So what does this mean? It means that they have agreed to legitimize this project by collecting all our donations under their 501(c)(3) non-profit organization status and making sure the money gets to BFT Center safe and sound. It also means that your donation is tax-deductible and any donor who makes a large contribution (typically over $250) will be able to obtain a receipt for tax purposes.

On another note, if you haven’t subscribed to this blog yet, be sure to do so in the sidebar to the right. That way you get immediate notification of any updates on progress or events.

Next up: Finally! The first volunteer meeting!  Here are the details:

Who: Anyone looking for a way to give back through a long-term fundraising commitment & interested in going to Cambodia in 2012 to see their hard work pay off!

When: Monday, January 24 at 6:30-7:30PM

Where: Dominican Joe Coffee Shop, 515 S. Congress Ave. (at Riverside Dr.)–subject to change based on group size.

If you did not receive the Evite (which went to people who already expressed interest), please leave a comment with your name and email address so I can get you on the list. Please only RSVP through there so I can best track who’s coming and update you on any changes if need be.
